Inspections and OPCAT
The Parliamentary Ombudsmen’s role in overseeing public authorities and protecting rights.
The Parliamentary Ombudsmen regularly inspects public authorities and courts in Sweden. During an inspection, one of the ombudsmen and their staff members review files and other documents, meet with senior administrators, and discuss matters of interest. A final report lists any errors or shortcomings observed and recommends corrective actions.
If issues cannot be resolved during the inspection, a new inquiry may be launched.
National Preventive Mechanism – NPM
Since July 2011, a dedicated unit within the Parliamentary Ombudsmen, the OPCAT unit, monitors that individuals deprived of their liberty are not subjected to inhumane treatment. The unit conducts inspections and participates in international cooperation on human rights protection.
